Everyone knows how important it is for students to have "good" teachers but I think we can all learn something from Nicholas Kristof's article and perhaps in the Jewish community we can find a better approach then removing some of the best teachers from their classroom into administration. We need great teachers and great principals but I think we need to realize that the skill sets are radically different and we often do a great disservice to the community at large but taking great teachers out of the classroom.

Last Minute Reminders

We are so excited to welcome you to Areyvut's 6th Annual Uncle Moishy Concert! Below are some last minute reminders and additional information to prepare you for the concert day.

Date: Sun., Jan. 1, 2012

Time: 10:00 - 11:30am

Location: Congregation Beth Sholom - 354 Maitland Ave. Teaneck, NJ 07666

Upon arriving at Congregation Beth Sholom you should check in with one of the Areyvut representatives on the lower level. He or she will check you in, provide you and your party with your admission bracelet(s) and answer any questions you may have about the program. There is no need to bring your payment confirmation, unless you purchased your tickets or sponsorship after 12:00pm on Fri., Dec. 30th.

The Uncle Moishy Concert will begin promptly at 10:00am and there WILL NOT be any intermission. Those who purchased sponsorships at any level (Family, Corporate, etc.) will have seats assigned and waiting for them and their party in the front of the auditorium. Individuals who purchased general admission tickets will have their selection of seats available to them on a first come, first served basis. We recommend that those who purchased general seating tickets and want "good" seats should arrive early (but no earlier than 9:30am), ensuring that they have best options available.

Snacks, beverages and Uncle Moishy souvenirs will be sold at the event. At 11:30am when the concert is over, E.J.'s pizza will be sold outside the auditorium. All items sold the day of the event can be paid for by cash or check only.

Finally, if you have friends or family that will be in town and are interested in coming to the concert, seats are still available. We recommend purchasing in advance by visiting the Areyvut website. Tickets are now $25.00 per person, children 24 months and younger, sitting on a parent's lap are FREE. Tickets will also be available for purchase (by cash or check only) on the day of the event.

2011 Tax Alert

The end of the year means many things including Chanukah, spending time with family and reflecting on your achievements and how the world has changed this year. This year, there is a new way to show your support for Areyvut. Tax-free distributions can be made from individual retirement plans for a charitable purpose. This "Charitable IRS Rollover", permits taxpayers age 70 1/2 or older to make tax-free distributions to Areyvut from any Individual Retirement Account (IRA) of up to $100,000 per taxpayer, per tax year. For questions or advice please contact your accountant or tax advisor.

How does this work?

The gift can be any amount, up to a maximum of $100,000 per year.

The gift needs to be an outright gift (as opposed to a planned or deferred gift).

The donor cannot receive a benefit in exchange for the gift.

The donor must be 70.5 years old.

The gift needs to be from a traditional or Roth IRA.

The amount you give must be otherwise taxable if distributed directly to you.

You need to make your gift before December 31, 2011, when the law is set to expire.

You need to make the gift directly to Areyvut by instructing your IRA trustee or custodian to distribute the funds directly to Areyvut.

Help Areyvut Meet the Challenge & Raise $50,000

I am excited to announce a Challenge Grant and Matching Funds opportunity. A donor has offered Areyvut $25,000 if we can raise $25,000 from other sources including you. Here is how it will work:

New and/or increased gifts with be matched 1 to 1. So if you gave $50 to Areyvut last year and you now give $100 your $50 increase will be matched and Areyvut will receive $50 from the donor. If you have never given to Areyvut and you give $180 your gift will be matched with another $180 from the donor.

This is already a wonderful opportunity but it gets even better.

For donors who commit to giving a gift for 3 years the donations will be matched 2 to 1. So if you gave Areyvut $500 last year and now commit to a gift of $1,000 for the next three years the donor will match -the first year increase- and Areyvut will get $1,000 from the donor as well as your gifts the next two years. This also applies to new gifts. So if you give $360 and commit to give $360 the next two years the donor will give Areyvut $720.

We have until the end of the month to raise the $25,000 to receive the $25,000 from the donor. Please make a commitment and gift today and inform your family, friends and colleagues about this challenge and match.

As most everyone has heard American Express is giving back (pun intended on this day before the day before Thanksgiving) to small business and nonprofit organizations this coming Saturday, November 26th.

9 Weeks...That's Like 6 Months in Blog Years

It's hard to believe, but the last time we posted something to this blog Rosh Hashanah 5772 hadn't occurred yet, Andy Rooney was still alive and could be seen on 60 Minutes, and the idea of having a major snowstorm in October that would cripple the Northeast sounded crazy. But, here we are 9 weeks later and a lot has changed.

In an effort to catch you up in all things Areyvut (and somewhat Areyvut related), I present you with this list.

Week of Sept. 26th - Areyvut celebrated Ilana H.'s birthday. Another one of our former interns turned another year older. The Jewish people of the world endured their first three day Yom Tov with several more to come before the holidays would be over.

Week of Oct. 2nd - Many observed Yom Kippur and an oddly high fraction of those I spoke with were sufficiently ill while fasting...myself included.

Week of Oct. 9th - The second of the three day Yom Tov observances came and went with Succot. It was so windy, we literally blew the roof off the place.

Week of Oct. 16th - The light at the end of the tunnel...Shmini Atzeret, Simchat Torah and Shabbat...and then a break from holidays with so many restrictions until Passover.

Week of Oct. 23rd - Believe it or not, we interviewed a potential intern this week. We love when people are eager and excited! Oh, and we also lived through the freak October snowstorm.

Week of Oct. 30th - While we got through the snowstorm unscathed, the power in the Areyvut office wasn't quite as lucky. We had a mandatory snow day for 2.5 days.

Week of Nov. 6th - Election Day and Veteran's Day were observed. I actually voted even though the person I was voting for was running against himself for his District Attorney seat. I hope he won. Also, Areyvut honors and salutes our veterans and thank them and their families for the sacrifices they have made for our country.

Though we are essentially all caught up to this point, I would be remiss if I didn't make mention of another birthday coming up this week. (If for no other reason because if I didn't it's likely we wouldn't hear about it until 2013). Happy Birthday Jordana "Jerd" S.! And a Happy Thanksgiving, Rosh Chodesh Kislev and Chanukah to all (just making sure all my bases are covered for a while).

Ten Young Jews, Making a Difference

The Forward highlighted 10 Jews 21 and under who are making a difference locally, nationally and globally. At 13, Ari Hiller, one of Areyvut's Mitzvah Clowns, is the youngest person featured. We are honored to work with Ari and thrilled that he and by extension Areyvut's Mitzvah Clown Program was included in this list and hope that Ari continues to engage, inspire and motivate others to serve and impact their communities.

Growing Philanthropy in the United States

Blackbaud and Hartsook Institutes for Fundraising have issued a report on Growing Philanthropy in the United States. The report does not present any groundbreaking never thought of before ideas but has many things that can easily be done that can and will have a profound impact on philanthropy in America and beyond. As you know, at Areyvut we think the more philanthropy the better and this report actively contributes to that goal.

Joanne Helperin wrote an article in the Jewish Journal highlighting her experience working with Areyvut on her son JJ's Bar Mitzvah and the importance of elevating Bnai Mitzvah celebrations and making them personally meaningful. We thank Joanne for this awesome article and for giving us an opportunity to work with her on JJ's Mitzvah Fair and I want to once again thank all the agencies who made the program such a success.

The end of 5771 is nearly upon us. Like many news magazine shows at the end of the secular year, I thought I would take some time to look back at the year that was and reflect.

In Honor-iam (Note: In Memoriam sounded way too depressing.)
Rebecca, Jordana, Uri and Robin...better known as Areyvut Interns 2.0. This year's group of interns truly outdid themselves. Yes, we certainly had our moments of insanity (specifically when it came to placing orders for Chickie's), fun (Areyvut's First Annual Color War) and extreme heat (running a bone marrow drive on the hottest day of the year in a building without air conditioning). This group brought their good humor and spirit with them everywhere they went and also infused it into their individual and group projects. The end result? A fundraiser, a 2012 calendar and a new and improved National Mitzvah Day. Need I say more?

Each week, as many of you know, we welcome two students from the Sinai Schools program at TABC. If the summer internship is the highlight of the Areyvut year, this is certainly the highlight of our week during the academic year. We are proud of this friendship and partnership and recently began our third year of this program. However, even with the start of our two newest students, we did have to say goodbye to one of our beloved teachers from the program, Mr. Sanders. Mr. Sanders joined us in the office for two years with his students. He provided, help, assistance, humor and a great deal of passion and energy. Though we miss having him in the office with us each week, we have no doubt that he has become a tremendous asset at his new school and wish him the best of luck.

And finally, this year I said goodbye to Internet Explorer. They say all good things must come to an end and Internet Explorer and I (or as I.E. as I call it) parted ways over the summer. We still remain good friends and I've even visited once or twice over the past few months, but after watching the moving and downright inspiration commercials for Google Chrome, I knew my web browser had a higher calling.

Interestingly enough, as I said goodbye to my interns in 2010 (better known as the 1.0 edition), Mr. Sanders and I.E., I never thought I'd be able to find anything comparable to them in their fields. I am happy that I was able to take a chance, embrace the new and have others be able to share their unique talents and capabilities with me that far exceeded any preconceived notions or expectations.

Best wishes for you and your family for a Shana Tova - a happy, healthy and sweet New Year. May we all strive to give everyone a chance and hopefully be surprised with incredible outcomes.

I don't know about you, but I love when I go out with friends and rather than dividing the check and then figuring out down the penny how much money each person owes for the tip, one person (who clearly had a good day at work) pipes up and says, "It's on me.". Though I usually wish I would have ordered more, I am always taken aback by my friends' kindness and generosity.

As loyal friends to hundreds of people from all different walks of life, Areyvut is happy to announce that the trip to Israel we are now publicizing, is on us! That's right, in cooperation with Birthright-Hibba, Areyvut is helping to develop a FREE 10 day trip to Israel. (Just don't forget to bring money for souvenirs.)

Before you pack your bags, please make sure to read these eligibility requirements. Even if you don't meet the criteria, we're willing to bet that someone in your life does, and we'd love it if you could pass along the information about this amazing trip. Note: This trip will be taking place in either December 2011 or January 2012 during the time when most colleges and universities are on vacation.

How Can You Believe in God?

Our friend and colleague Shmuel Greenbaum wrote this today on Tisha B'av and on the 10th anniversary of the Sbarro's attack that killed his wife Shoshana, 14 others and injured 130. I encourage you to read it, sign up to get Shmuel's e-mails and to do some chesed (kindness) today and every day to actively contribute to making the world a better place.

Machatzit Hashekel on Tisha B'Av

Tonight is Tisha B'av. Everyone knows that we mourn the destruction of the Beit HaMikdash (the Temple) and it was destroyed because Jews showed sinat chinam (baseless hatred) towards other Jews. During this time period we try to work on ourselves and to have ahavat chinam (love for all Jews) and improve the way we act towards each other. I believe that most people know this but know we can all work on this and have an out of the box suggestion to make that I hope you consider and pass along to your rabbi and communal leaders.

On Purim when we go to shul (synagogue) we give a Machatzit Hashekel (half shekel) or really the equivalent in local currency. We give this because it commemorates the contributions that Jews made to the building of the mishkan (tabernacle) and to purchase animals for korbanot (sacrifices). The leftover funds were used for communal purposes including paying the judges salaries and taking care of the maintenance in the Beit HaMikdash. This is a Biblical law, all people participate and give the same amount, that of a half shekel.

To help work on our ahavat chinam and to help us be more sensitive to those around us I suggest that every person who goes to shul on Tisha B'Av give $5 to an agency that actively teaches and promotes Jewish unity or that shuls have a collection in a central location like they do on Purim.

Think of how powerful this can be! This can be a powerful example of Jewish unity. Everyone can participate. It can raise awareness of important community agencies that serve all Jews and teach the message of ahavat chinam. With every one's $5 these agencies can better serve the community and each person that participates will make a concerted effort to actively play a role in combating shinat chinam and ensuring ahavat chinam.

To be clear I am borrowing the concept of Machatzit Hashekel from Purim but am not advocating that we use that phrase and/or that this become part of halakha (Jewish law). I simply think this is an idea that addresses a number of important issues and deserves to be explored and discussed.

I realize that this may not be implemented this year (or ever) and that it in many communities it may need board approval and may be a challenge to select appropriate recipient agencies. I am just suggesting this as a concrete way to help us be more sensitive to one another and to inculcate the values we are told to value always and especially during this time period into our lives.

If your community and/or your synagogue implement this idea please let us know, credit us and please include Areyvut among the agencies you support. Thanks in advance and best wishes for an easy and meaningful fast.

First Annual Kayitz Classic 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament

At this time of year when we mourn the destruction of the Beit HaMikdash and look for ways to increase Jewish unity and come together I want to personally invite you to join you us next week.

Don't miss the 1st Annual Kayitz Classic 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament, hosted by Areyvut, Moshava Ba'Ir and the Frisch School, Wednesday, August 10 from 6:30-10:00 PM at the Frisch School- The Henry and Esther Swieca Family Campus located at 120 West Century Road in Paramus. Have a great time and support these three agencies that serve the community.

The tournament includes a three game minimum, t-shirt and drinks and the cost is $75 per player and $225 per 3 person team. The registration deadline is Monday, August 8 or when space closes out.

To register each team needs to complete this Google Doc and put in information about their teammates and shirt sizes and you can pay on the Areyvut website. Or if you prefer you can mail in your check made payable to Areyvut and send it to:

Birthright Needs New Leadership, So Do We

The Jewish Week has an article that suggests that Birthright Israel a) add new board members who are younger and can relate to and understand the target audience, perhaps alumni who recently attended trips and b) that boards need to be properly trained and have the appropriate skill set for that particular agency. Areyvut agrees with this approach and plans to add several new board members -including a current intern (and a former intern I hope)- who are closer to our target audience and bring a unique perspective. We feel that this approach is essential and will help energize the board, enable Areyvut to face challenges and grow stronger. If you know of someone who might be appropriate please let me know.

These foundations are often overlooked by the media and leaders within the non-profit community and sometimes people do not realize the profound impact they have in their communities, with the agencies they support and in the foundation world. For anyone looking to set up a donor advised fund we recommend the Jewish Communal Fund. They provide excellent service, support the community and if/when I win the lottery I am opening my donor advised fund with them. In the interim, I encourage foundations that unfortunately had to consider setting up a donor advised fund so they can continue to fund, support and impact their community.

This approach can help agencies determine which projects make sense and fit within their mission and others that they should discontinue. Foundations and individuals funders need to understand that agencies need a basic infrastructure to support their mission. I believe this can be addressed by building in overhead into each program and think funders need to understand that without a proper framework everything will fall apart.

For National Mitzvah Day we have developed a variety of hands-on project ideas that directly relate to physically building, and building and strengthening community and interpersonal relationships. We have heard the phrase Olam Chesed Yibaneh many times and were familiar with the concept but did not know the source and in preparing for the program we sought out the source. The phrase is from Tehillim (Psalms) 89:3. It is important that people use sources for concepts that have their basis in text and to attribute things appropriately.

A volunteer agency fair is like an expo at a conference and features agencies that offer hands-on on-going volunteer opportunities. At the fair students and their parents meet with representatives to learn about opportunities they have and how they can get involved with the agencies on a regular basis. Each participant receives a booklet highlighting the agencies and the opportunities offered. The booklet is an important resource that helps participants connect to the appropriate agency once they decide what they want to do. Areyvut staff is available at every program to help participants brainstorm ideas and to suggest additional agencies as necessary. This program is geared towards middle school and high school students and a volunteer agency fair can also feature:
A text study addressing the importance of chesed.

A presentation by a student who has done an innovative project. The student can explain what they did, why they did it, how it impacted them and be available to answer questions.

A presentation by an Areyvut staff member about ways to incorporate chesed in your life on a daily basis.

A hands-on fair features on-site hands-on activities to benefit local community agencies. For this program participant's visit various stations that offer hands-on opportunities for them to perform mitzvot that can help others. This program is suitable for all ages.

Both models can be combined.

Areyvut personalizes each program to best meet the needs of the host agency and works with them to develop goals for the program and criteria for the agencies. Areyvut identifies appropriate agencies, reaches out to them, coordinates and implements all aspects of the program. The host agency is responsible for marketing and for providing the audience (and Areyvut highlights these programs on our website and in our e-newsletter and encourages you to open them to the broader community).

The Fine Print

This offer is available to the first 25 schools, synagogues and agencies and/or until July 31.

The article highlights the impact this program has on families -like me- that receive the books and how it has also impacted the publishers. What is clear to me from the success of the PJ Library model is the importance of partnering with each local community and providing the books and programs that sometimes accompany them in many communities for free and/or a nominal amount. In this way you ensure local buy and are able to reach the masses at no or minimal cost to them and provide them with compelling and relevant content. Here, There and Everywhere...The Interns Have Arrived!

For several years now I have said that summertime is the best time in the Areyvut office. It is the time when laughter (hopefully) can be heard from miles away and the office furniture is all used up. Though I have been welcoming new Areyvut interns for several summers now, somehow this group and this summer is different.

In a typical year, there is a certain amount of time that has to pass before the interns feel comfortable in the office. That is to say, that they loosen up, joke around and if we're lucky at the very end of the summer, there may be a prank or two. (Note: Pranks are only funny when they are done on someone else.)

While I am happy that our newest interns, Jordana, Rebecca, Robin and Uri, enjoy spending time with us and know how to have a good time in the office...I would be lying if I didn't make note of the fact that I am actually nervous come Monday morning. This coming Monday I will be flying back from (G-d willing) my friend's wedding in Washington, DC. Believe me when I tell you, I will be taking all of my belongings home with me...every picture, every knickknack every single thing I deem to be important will be leaving the office with me on Friday.

Though the office is a more lively and energetic place right now, that's not to say that work is not getting done. We have Jordana working on programs, Rebecca who is single-handedly revamping "Make a Difference" Day, Robin sorting the entire calendar into themes and Uri who will be responsible for all grants this summer. While I have no doubt that this summer will be a fun filled one...I also have no doubt that it will be a productive one as well.

Volunteering + Values: A Repair the World Report on Jewish Young Adults

Repair the World has released a detailed study on contemporary Jewish young adults and their attitudes and behaviors towards community service. I thank them for all they have done to highlight the field of Jewish service and know this study will lead to lots of important conversations, programs, etc.

I think it would be great if someone studied the same issues but focused on an often overlooked population, namely tweens and teens. Many of the efforts in the organized Jewish community today (think PJ Library, Birthright Israel, Moishe House) are focused on early childhood, college and post college years and we do not put as much energy into the tween and teen years as we should. Aside from Jewish camping and day schools we neglect this age cohort. I believe this is why we spend so much time, energy and money on programming for college, post college and young professionals but it doesn't have to be that way. If we invested in tweens and teens and linked the silos with regard to service we would be able to meaningful engage tweens and teens during middle school and high school. That is 7 years that we often lose people Jewishly and as we know we sometimes never get them back.

In the past I have pointed out issues with studies and hope there is a funder or organizational leader reading this and look forward to working with them on a study to learn about the attitudes and behaviors of tweens and teens.

Charity on a grand scale

Fortune has an article talking about the one year anniversary of the Giving Pledge. I think the Giving Pledge is good for philanthropy but many people -myself included- were hoping for a greater impact than it has had to date. From what I have read few of the people who have signed the pledge have advocated for their peers to sign or have spoken about the importance and impact of the pledge. Please keep in mind that I do not hang out with these people nor do I interact with their staffs, foundations and representations but I welcome them all to contact me and to learn more about Areyvut. However, I have reached out to a few of them and am still waiting to hear back from most of them but want to once again acknowledge Mayor Bloomberg for being a mentch.

I think it would be unbelievably powerful if each one of the 69 people who have signed thus far dedicate a day per month to speaking about the pledge, explaining why it's important to them, the causes they are passionate about and how giving makes them feel. In doing so, I believe they will have a more profound impact on the national conversation on philanthropy and will encourage others in their position to sign the pledge and will inspire the rest of us to do what we can to make a difference. Remember what Dolly Parton taught us last week- you don't need to be rich to give.

On Wednesday, June 22, 2011, Areyvut will be having a Bowl-A-Thon to support the H.O.P.E. (Helping Organizations Provide Essentials) Program at Yeshivat Noam.

Over the last few months a select group of 7th grade students from Yeshivat Noam have participated in the H.O.P.E. Program. The students participated in nine fun-filled sessions where they learned as much as possible about philanthropy and its importance in the community. Working collaboratively with their peers they determined what type of, and more specifically which organizations should receive funding. This program allows each individual student the opportunity to make their own unique contribution. The camaraderie between the students was remarkable and throughout the sessions we could see tremendous growth and maturity. Students learned crucial life long lessons and values that will change their lives forever. Most notably, they learned how to give money thoughtfully, funding and engaging in the community.

Initially, the Areyvut staff exposed the students to various non-profit organizations. It was then up to the students to decide which specific organization they would like to fund. This past year the students donated $2,200 to two organizations. Chai Lifeline, which caters to children with cancer and other life threatening illnesses received $1,590. The Butterflies Program of Valley Health, an in-home hospice care program for children, received $610 in funding.

There was a great deal of positive feedback:

"I now realize the massive amount of help that people need, and how important it is to help them. I loved the feeling of making a difference and can't wait to continue doing it throughout my life. H.O.P.E. has truly inspired me to make a change, and I can't wait to inspire others." -Rachel S.

Dolly Parton Says Giving Back Has Nothing To Do With Being Rich

Dolly Parton who founded the Imagination Library which in turn inspired the launch of The PJ Library told Fox News that giving back has nothing to do with being rich and according to traditional Jewish sources she is 100% correct. We are taught that even poor people who support themselves from tzedakah are obligated to give. This is such an important lesson and one that profoundly impacts giving. I believe that all the philanthropists, athletes, movie stars and famous people who have given throughout their life and before they made it give a greater % of their income than people who only give once they made it. Let me you know what you think. I think the stats support Dolly's premise and underscore the relevance of traditional Jewish teachings.

The 10 Commandments: A Child Friendly Version

In preparation for Shavuot I recently read No Rules For Michael to my children. We received the book from The PJ Library which is a project of the Harold Grinspoon Foundation that provides thousands of free books to Jewish children throughout the country. In the back of the book it provides a child friendly version of the Esseret HaDibrot or 10 Commandments. I want to share their child friendly version as we spend the next few days eating cheesecake, recommitting ourselves to Torah and instilling Jewish values with our families.

There is only one God.

God is so amazing that no one can draw a picture or make anything that looks like God.

God's name is very special and should be said with great care.

Shabbat is the most special day of the week- a day to rest and enjoy the world around us.

Honor and listen to your parents.

Life is precious. Do not hit or hurt anyone.

Married people should respect each other.

Do not take anything that doesn't belong to you.

Always tell the truth. Do not tell lies.

Be happy with what you have. Don't be jealous of other people or what they have.

Reflections on H.O.P.E.

Later this morning we will host our H.O.P.E. Check Presentation and Celebration at Yeshivat Noam. We are so excited and would once again like to thank Targum Shlishi for facilitating this extraordinary program! This program is one of Areyvut's programming highlights and this day is one of my favorite days of the year because H.O.P.E. powerfully impacts participants and ignites a lifelong commitment to helping others and serving the community which is what Areyvut is all about. Advice to the Graduates: ‘Get Out of Facebook and Into Somebody's Face’

The Forward has advice from Jews who recently spoke at college graduations. I always find these things of interest. These articles generate lots of conversation and people often have strong opinions about the messages as they should. However, I wonder how many people have thought about what message they would give if they were asked to speak at a graduation. It is easy to comment or critique someone else's speech after the fact but much harder to develop your own inspiring message.

I want to encourage Jewish high schools -and even middle schools- to consider inviting someone from the broader community to share a message to the graduates. It can be a powerful experience and one they are more likely to remember than who presented the class gift.

Let me tell you a bit about the current board and the expectations of board members.

Areyvut is pluralistic and works with all the denominations and movements. Therefore, we have a diverse board and seek board members who are Reform, Conservative, Orthodox, unaffiliated and just Jewish.

In the past Areyvut has had board members in their 20's through 60's. The current board is comprised of four people in their 40's (at next weeks meeting we hope to welcome a new member under 30 to the board!) and we are open to anyone regardless of age who is excited about our work and willing to share their knowledge, experience and partner with us to improve our current infrastructure.

We generally meet in the evenings five times a year from 7:00-8:30 and expect for board members to attend the meetings and to play an active role in between meetings.

We are not looking to add specific categories of professions to the board such as doctor, lawyer, accountant, educator but, rather we want committed, passionate and talented people regardless of their title looking to give back.

We want board members to see the import and impact of Areyvut's programs firsthand. So we invite them to all of our programs and would like them to attend at least two programs a year.

A passion and commitment to Areyvut's mission and vision is essential.

So if you think chesed, tzedakah and tikkun olam are core Jewish values and want to play an active role in bringing that message and programs to schools, synagogues, JCC's, camp and other agencies please consider joining us.

Believe it or not, this is the very question Daniel posed to me right before running out to attend a conference this morning. Though I first thought it was a rhetorical question, as he closed the door, he asked that I post my response to the blog, in an effort to inspire others to share what Areyvut means to them.

At its most basic level, Areyvut means work for me. Not in a bad way, but in a practical way. It is after all where I go each day to work...even if my Dad still doesn't understand what I do all day. On a slightly deeper level, it's the place where I get to be creative and hopefully get others to feel that way too. It's where I create innovative, fun and educational programs to help Jewish teens get involved, feel fulfilled and ignite their life long passion for chesed, tzedakah and tikkun olam.

PEJE Announces Rabbi Elkin is Leaving in Fall

PEJE announced yesterday that Rabbi Josh Elkin their executive director is leaving in the fall and that Amy Katz the associate director will be taking over as acting director.

Areyvut has had a wonderful relationship with PEJE, has attended their day school conferences and assemblies, presented on social justice and has partnered with schools throughout the country as a result of partnering with PEJE. We wish Rabbi Elkin continued success and look forward to working with Amy and the entire PEJE team.

BU Philanthropy Incubator

I have often written about Jewish Teen Philanthropy and how these programs impact participants, teach leadership skills and enable participants to learn about community needs, etc. I have also provided educators leading these programs with ideas and resources to teach and engage their participants. Through a Google alert I came across this story and video about Binghamton University's Philanthropy Incubator program. The program and course that the BU students did is very similar to the Jewish Teen Philanthropy Programs that Areyvut that and others in the field offer.

Last year at this time I wrote about a similar program at the University of Maryland. It seems like universities are now understanding the benefits of such a program. I hope that this development helps those in the field understand the import and impact of their work and attracts interest from foundations and individuals to support Jewish Teen Philanthropy Programs and grow the field.

The Jewish Week just released their annual 36 Under 36 list of people who impact and shape the community. I have no issues with this list and think it often highlights people, projects and causes that many in the broader community do not know about and can benefit from. I would like to suggest to the powers that be at the Jewish Week that they consider publishing 18 Under 18 with a specific focus on chesed. Some of you may be thinking am I being serious or did I just have too many blue and white cookies as part of my Yom HaAtzmaut celebration. While I do enjoy the blue and white cookies I am serious and think that such a section would highlight service and encourage people of all ages to do their part to support these efforts and do what they can to impact their communties.

At Areyvut we do what we can to highlight these students. In our Teen Scene we highlight a student every month and our Bnai Mitzvah Video Essay Contest recognizes students that have done innovative Mitzvah Projects. These students serve to engage and inspire others to join them and follow in their example. Just think about how powerful an 18 Under 18 focused on chesed could be.

The Volunteers: Answering the Call of History

Jews throughout the world are thinking about Israel now and what the State of Israel means to them and the sacrifice that soldiers have made in defending the land. Toldot Yisrael is a unique Jerusalem based nonprofit that is dedicated to recording and sharing firsthand testimonies of those who helped found the State of Israel. They just released a video entitles The Volunteers: Answering the Call to History. This video joins Echoes of the Shofar and The Story of the Vote in a video series for the History Channel. You can see some of their other videos and can incorporate them into your Yom HaZikaron, Yom HaAtzmaut and Yom Yerushalayim programming as well as into any programs or classes that relate to Zionism and modern Jewish history. It is critical that today and every day we remember the sacrifices and contributions people made to establish and defend the State of Israel. Thanks to Toldot Yisrael we have these stories and videos to share with our students, families and communities.

Reflections on Fair @ SAR

Earlier this week Areyvut had a Bnai Mitzvah Fair at SAR Academy for 5th grade girls and their parents. The goal of the program was to expose the students to a variety of volunteer opportunities and encourage them to play an active role in the community. The fair featured more than 10 agencies that represented Israel, health care, poverty, the arts and other causes. The feedback from the program was awesome and included comments like:

I really enjoyed being in a room with others involved in chesed!

It was an honor to be in attendance.

The fair was terrific.

Areyvut is proud to develop these programs and thrilled to get students involved in the community at a young age and to ignite a lifelong passion for the core Jewish values of chesed, tzedakah and tikkun olam.

Resources for Enhancing your Passover

If you are like me you have been receiving tons of e-mails from friends, family and organizations wishing you a Happy Passover. You probably have also been busy shopping, cooking, cleaning and involved in all sorts of Passover preparations. You may not have had as much time as you thought you would to prepare for the seder. So here are some resources and videos that you can use to enhance your experience:

Shalom Sesame- Children, adults and all Le Miserables fans will enjoy this video.

The JTA brings us the top 10 Ma Nishtana videos and 90 years of Passover reporting. (It is important for us to acknowledge the JTA for all they do for the community on a daily basis and no they did not ask me for the plug but I really think they provide a value but often over looked resource.)

We are told to relate the story to modern events and the Forward relates four characters from Glee to the four sons. If you are not a fan of Glee feel free to substitute your favorite show and discuss amongst yourselves at your seder.

Our friends at Tzedek have developed a companion to the Haggadah.

In Denial (or d'Nile) About Passover

Of all of the Jewish holidays that have the potential to "sneak up on you"...Passover is certainly not one of them. To me, Passover is like the equivalent of a freight train - I can hear it coming from a mile away and try to avoid it at all costs. In fact, though I consider myself a fairly religious person, I'm the first one to admit that I often have no idea what date corresponds to a Jewish holiday in any given year. This is especially confusing for my non-Jewish friends who start preparing for Christmas a month (or two or three) in advance and can't understand how I never know when Chanukah is...at least not until I consult my calendar or see someone else's chanukiah burning brightly on my way home from work.

Most anyone who knows me, knows that Passover is definitely not one of my favorite holidays. Being the low key, relaxed and anti-anxiety person that I am, Passover is actually one of my least favorite holidays. In some ways, I do get it. There's a lot of cooking, cleaning and kashering that has to get done, all while still dealing with the mounds of candy and non-kosher-for-Passover items received over Purim. Typically, it is at this point when I include some information and resources about ways in which to enhance one's Passover...at least, I think that's what I wrote about last year. But this year, in an effort to start Passover off on the right foot and to impact even more people around you...I provide you with the pre-Passover shopping resource guide.

1. Don't plague others because you can't find the brand of matzah you'd like to purchase. When shopping, be sure to move your cart in a way that ensures that others have access to the aisle as well.

2. When singing "Who Knows One" fingers and toes are needed to count. Be mindful, and do not ram your carts into others rendering their digits useless (or in pain).

3. Don't make others feel afflicted by their Passover grocery receipt. If you have coupons that you know you aren't going to use, give them to someone else in the store that would find them useful.

4. You're busy, I'm busy, we're all busy...but while you're already shopping, consider adding an extra item or two to your cart and donating it to an organization that helps those who are disadvantaged provide Passover meals for their families.

5. Be polite, courteous and helpful. Speak nicely to the people that are taking up the whole matzah meal aisle as well as to those who assist you in the store. Consider helping your cashier bag your items as this will help them, help you and help those in line behind you.

More Tips for Putting Together a Mitzvah Project

We have addressed Bnai Mitzvah in the past here and here but the Bnai Mitzvah Handbook at Temple Emanuel in Andover, MA suggests 13 strategies for teens in selecting their projects that we
want to share with you:

1. Read your Torah portion to see how it relates to performing mitzvot.

2. Make a list of your interests-sports, reading music, etc.

3. Make a list of the type of groups you might want to work with-children, senior citizens, the
mentally or physically challenged, animals, etc.

4.Combine your interest with the type of groups you want to work with. For example, a person who likes
art might want to help teach an art class to senior citizens in a nursing home. Be creative!

5.Discuss your ideas with your parents and teachers. They will give you an object view of your plans
and might suggest things you may not have considered.

6. Be realistic about the amount of time you will be able to devote to the project.

7. Find out if you need help in connecting with a specific organization.

8. Make sure that your desire and motivation to volunteer matches the availability and needs of that
particular organization.

9. Develop a project or plan that you've thought out carefully and present this in a professional and
appropriate manner, especially when it involves a targeted group or person.

10. Don't get discouraged if you find that your project needs to be reworked or changed slightly.

11. Finalize the details, such as when and how often you will work, if you can do part of the work at
home, scheduling a location and a date to hold a particular event, and what you might need help with,
among many others.

12. Create an action list in consultation with your parents. Most likely your project will require some
support and assistance from them.

13. Prioritize each item on your action list, and set a completion date for each one. This will give you an
overall timeline for your project.

Thomas J. Tierney a co-founder of The Bridgespan Group, a nonprofit focused on helping donors and nonprofits to maximize their impact has published a book called Give Smart. In the book, distills ten years of Bridespan's experience, knowledge, and case studies with philanthropy expert Joel L. Fleishman's research and insights to create a much-needed primer for philanthropists and the nonprofit organizations they support. They explain that philanthropy is personal and situational and that there is no magic formula for one's philanthropy work; the path to results is through wrestling with the right questions at the right time. Give Smart asks six challenging questions to guide donors through the process:

What are my values and beliefs?

What is "success" and how can it be achieved?

What am I accountable for?

What will it take to get the job done?

How do I work with grantees?

Am I getting better?

These question are ones that we often discuss when working with students on Mitzvah Projects and in our teen philanthropy programs.

New study shows impact of youth development programs on student success

A new study explores the impact youth programs like those Areyvut and similar agencies implement have on students success. I believe that the programs we implement are essential to the social, emotional, religious and educational development of the participants and unfortunately some in the community and even those in leadership positions do not see it that way. I suggest that people who question the import and impact of these programs read the study and speak directly to the students, teachers and administrators who participate in these programs to learn how these programs have impacted them.

Mayor Mike is a Mentch

I know that many people were or are still upset with Mayor Michael Bloomberg about how he handled snow removal this past winter, the new chancellor for the board of education and many other issues. However, I believe that Major Bloomberg is really a mentch. Please allow me to explain why. A while back on behalf of Areyvut I sent letters requesting support to some of the leading Jewish philanthropists in the country, many of whom have signed The Giving Pledge. A representative of Major Bloomberg's foundation called me shortly after receiving my letter to say that at this time they are not accepting unsolicited proposals and therefore they could not support Areyvut. Who does this? There are many individuals and foundations that I am still waiting to hear back from several weeks or months later. I believe that the way Mayor Bloomberg's foundation deals with agencies requesting support- or at least the way they dealt with Areyvut- is above what is expected and shows that even if they cannot support you they still value you, your time and appreciate contribution to the community. It is a lesson that I hope others will follow.

Stuck in Quarantine

Rabbi Nina Mizrahi the Director of the Pritzker Center for Jewish Education at the JCC Chicago sends out a weekly Shabbat Message about the parsha and/or a timely message. Below is her message for this week:

The "Quarantine" can apply to human beings, materials and vehicles. Medically, quarantine involves the isolation of people who either have a contagious disease or have been exposed to one, in an attempt to prevent the spread of the disease. Such isolation was imposed on new immigrants, as was the case for those who were detained at Ellis Island for a period of 40 days. Quarantine can encompass social, political and economic isolation which is imposed as a punishment. An individual might be ostracized or sanctions enforced against a foreign nation in retribution for what the US considers to be unacceptable policies.

Today, as in many institutions, emails received at JCC from unrecognized sources are sent to quarantine. In the beginning, I just assumed that if they were sent there, they belonged there. But then I started receiving inquiries (to put it politely) from folks asking why I had not responded to their email. Sure enough, they (the people or the emails?) had been sent to quarantine. Curious, I began exploring what had been quarantined over the past couple of months. Sure enough, there was the usual spam promising a more fulfilling love life and a range of seedy or highly suspect offers. What else did I find? Invitations, promotions, and updates from legitimate institutions, including those in the Jewish world.

Okay, to be honest, on some level I don't mind having fewer emails to plow through. On the other hand, I had also missed messages from the congregation on who was born and who passed away, and a message from my daughter asking me to call her. One of my colleagues had sent multiple emails - and to think I thought she had been ignoring me. I felt like a heel.

In sharing this with one of my co-workers, she mentioned yet another mistaken quarantine email - from the organization, Areyvut (www.areyvut.org), which is dedicated to promoting works of kindness (hesed), generosity (tzedakah) and repairing what is broken in our world (tikkun olam). Such critical values should only be contagious - think about how much better our world would be! As Shabbat approaches, consider what behaviors, thoughts or feelings need to be placed in quarantine, where they can receive the focus they need to promote healing. And consider how those values and the actions they drive can become more contagious in your life and in the lives of those you touch.

NCAA Bracket and Nonprofit Organizations...A Comparison

For the first time ever, I completed an NCAA bracket for March Madness. No, I'm not a college basketball buff (though I do know that the Maryland Terrapins took home the title in 2002...but that's only because I was a student there at the time). In fact, I was invited to complete a bracket on ESPN.com by my five year old nephew, or more accurately, my brother-in-law on behalf of my five year old nephew. He thought it would be a good way for my nephew to learn about the game and have others involved in the process. (Note: My nephew is quite well versed in all things sports and recently explained to me what a two point conversion is in football as I had never heard of it before...apparently, I'm not a sports buff at all.)

I took a look at the teams and quickly determined that I was going to select Ohio State to win the whole thing. I didn't really have a good reason for that determination...but so far, it seems to be working in my favor. It was filling out the rest of my bracket that would prove to be difficult for me. It turns out that the NCAA Bracket maven in my family is my 8 year old niece who I doubt has ever seen a college basketball game, except for when her dad and brother commandeer the television in the family room. If one were to compare my bracket and her bracket side by side they would notice one thing right away...hers has a lot more green. One would also notice that she is in the 96th percentile, while I'm holding steady at 47.8 percent.

You're probably wondering right about now what the NCAA Bracket has to do with Areyvut or why I am even mentioning it in this blog. Well, over the last week or so I have learned that NCAA teams competing for the National Championship are a lot like nonprofit organizations. There are often going to be those teams that seem as though they are on par with one another and once in a while a school with less athletic recognition will pull off an upset...but each has its staunch supporters, always wanting to see that individual school succeed. The same holds true for nonprofit organizations, and Areyvut in particular. As a smaller organization, it is easy to view us as a Hampton University (lost in the first round to Duke)...but we hope you'll give us a shot...you never know, we may surprise you and become your Morehead State.

"Make a Difference" Day, our National Mitzvah Day that will take place over the April 1 - 3 weekend. My sister recently sent me an e-mail with the subject "Need some cheering up? This will put a smile on your face" with a link to this video. The video brought a smile to my face and illustrates the power of bringing people together, getting others involved, the importance of being active, not being worried about what other people think and that being genuinely happy positively impacts those around you. These are messages that are appropriate every day but seem more important today and now in relation to recent events.

It also reminds me that I have a lot of traveling that I want to do at some point. Share the video and its message with a friend today.

Our good friend Andrea Cohen who runs the B'nai Tzedek Youth Philanthropy Program in Phoenix wrote an article for the Jewish News of Greater Phoenix giving advice to parents on infusing their child's Bnai Mitzvah celebration with chesed and serving the community. On Sunday we had a great Mitzvah Clown Program in the Twin Cities. I want to once again thank Mt. Zion Temple for hosting the training, Sholom Community Alliance for hosting the site visit, Sue Lund for her help in bringing the program to fruition, the sponsors and the participants. The program was awesome and we trained 16 clowns and have now trained more than 140 Mitzvah Clowns! Tweeting for a Cause

I am the first one to admit that I am no Twitter expert. Though, even in my self-proclaimed amateur status I have somehow managed to learn how to schedule automated tweets to be sent out...something I am particularly proud of. While I am not one of those people who sits on Twitter all day pouring through each new tweet, I do check a few times a day, with a particular interest in a few individuals and organizations.

I find that Twitter is remarkable in that it can connect you with virtually (pun intended) anyone...at least anyone with a Twitter account. As a nonprofit organization, it is a great way to get up to the minute information about other local, regional, national and international nonprofits. It can also be extremely entertaining to see the juxtaposition of one tweet next to another in your timeline. But perhaps what is most fun for me is characterizing the tweets, or rather the people they come from...

There is the list of people that I actually know...it's a short list...quick shout out to chaimshapiro from Touro College (great time at the Career Fair last week!), raqueleve (who hasn't updated her tweets in nearly a year...no kidding) and molliefeldman (who proudly proclaims that she "likes sweet potatoes").

Then there are the Twitter feeds that we follow because I find the icon or the the name of the Twitter feed funny. These would include: pulseonbusiness (the icon is a picture of Michael Scott from The Office!), yidlids (yes, it tweets about hats) and my all time favorite theawkwardtweet (which points out all those awkward moments you've no doubt experienced, but were too ashamed to acknowledge).

And finally there are the tweets that make you think...about where you live or work (bergenation)...about the true impact celebrities can have (looktothestars)...about vacationing (deltaassist)!

National Day of Unplugging

This Shabbat is the National Day of Unplugging where people are encouraged to go 24 hours without their cell phones, computers, etc. As one who spends every Shabbat unplugged and with family and friends I highly recommend it to those of you who do not normally do so. This Shabbat also coincides with NJOP's Shabbat Across America. I hope you have a relaxing, rewarding and uplifting Shabbat.

Ben Brafman @ Agudah

In the summer of 2009, Mr. Ben Brafman presented to the Agudah on ethics, values and how Jews should act. I saw the videos from his presentation shortly after they were posted and saw that a friend posted them again this week on Facebook and wanted to encourage you to spend a few minutes to watch them. This week's message about tzedakah specifically from 3:40-5:30 is particularly powerful, timely and relevant and one that every educator should address with their students. H.O.P.E. is Back

With the help of a grant from Targum Shlishi, Areyvut's Jewish Teen Philanthropy program H.O.P.E. which stands for Helping Organizations Provide Essentials returns to Yeshivat Noam this month. The program is for geared for 7^th graders and we look forward to building on the success of last year's program. Below is a tentative schedule and overview of the program.

Session #1- Introduction to H.O.P.E. & Philanthropy

During this initial program, participants will be asked to participate in group exercises to foster a feeling of unity and team building. Facilitators will introduce the group to philanthropy and discuss how it can be compared and contrasted with community service and tzedakah. The group will also touch upon the notion of giving "Jewishly", what that concept entails and how it pertains to them.

Session #2- Area of Focus & Mission Statement
Program participants will be presented with a vast array of potential areas of focus ranging from education to hunger and poverty to the environment. Students will work collaboratively to determine the area they would like to focus on and develop a mission statement. This mission statement will then be utilized by the students in determining the type of organization(s) they will potentially support financially.

Session #3- Review of Organizations
Students will be presented with a number of organizations that fit the area of focus they would like to address as indicated in their mission statement. Participants will review information about these organizations and compare the organizations' needs with their mission statement and the area they are looking to support. By the end of this session the group will select which organization(s) they want to invite to send RFPs.

Session #4- Create & Send RFP
During this session the group will learn what an Request for Proposal (RFP) is, create one and send it to no more than five organizations of interest.

Session #5- RFP Review & Invite Organizations to Information Session
Students will have the opportunity to review the RFPs that were distributed to organizations during the previous session. They will then determine collaboratively which organization(s) they would like to invite to meet with for their on-site site visit at the school. No more than three organizations will be invited to attend the site visit.

Session #6- Site Visits
Representatives from the organization(s) still under consideration for funding will meet with the group. The students will have the opportunity to ask questions to learn more about the organization(s) and specific programs that they are interested in supporting.

Session #7- Allocations Determinations
The group will work together to determine how much funding each organization should receive and learn about Rambam's Hierarchy of Tzedakah.

Session #8- Chesed Activity
The group will engage in a hands-on chesed activity for a local organization in need.

Session #9- Commencement Celebration

Parents and teachers will be invited to attend this celebration during which the students will review what they learned throughout the program year, share information and present checks to the agencies they decided to support.
